The Making of Magnificent Merchandise
Checking in from the product team!
Shane Hayes and I have known each other for more than 25 years, and between us, we have worked for most of the best-known retailers, manufacturers and suppliers in the window coverings industry. Three years ago, we joined forces at Blinds.com with the goal of developing the best possible assortment of custom blinds, shades, shutters and drapes available.
Like many retailers, we carry the most popular brands of window treatments, such as Bali, Levolor and Norman, but more than half of our sales come from exclusive Blinds.com branded products that we have developed with our dozens of suppliers from around the globe.
In addition to working with the manufacturers of the finished products, we develop relationships that go much deeper into the supply chain, with the makers of fabric, components, hardware and motors, plus we strive to understand the processes and machinery used to make our products. We often design our own color lines and materials to ensure that we have the newest in fashion, and we specify the latest in technology and safety. We also get input from our hundreds of co-workers and millions of customers.
Today, our products contain components from every continent except Antarctica!
Is every product we design a winner? No way! Some never make it out of “the lab” because they don’t meet our quality or aesthetic standards. Occasionally, a product is launched on Blinds.com, but it doesn’t generate the sales to justify the space, so we take it down and try again. We love working in the online retail arena, because we can quickly bring a product to market, and know immediately if we have a “keeper” on our hands.
Last week we braved the cold and traveled to Stuttgart, Germany where we spent 4 full days combing the 9 large halls at R+T, the world’s leading industry event for blinds, shades and shutters, on the lookout for new inventions and ideas. We brought back many concepts that we will be turning into new products, and launching on Blinds.com in the coming months. Stay tuned!
