Fresh paint and new blinds, Blinds.com partners with Rebuilding Together Houston
This month, the Blinds.com team participated in a charity construction event for Rebuilding Together Houston – helping a lovely Houston couple named Mr. and Mrs. Douglas. Read on for what our fearless event leader Kara Holland had to say:
We painted the home and refreshed the yard of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas; it was so incredible to help the family of a veteran. I think the team was excited to get their hands dirty and do some physical labor to help someone else out. Our friendly, can-do attitudes may have taken them by surprise when we went for the initial home visit – I even showed up with a big basket of groceries!
Why Rebuilding Together Houston?
I suggested working with Rebuilding Together Houston because I’ve worked with them before – my father is on a crew called Ramp Angels that builds wheelchair ramps for the homes of disabled people. They are also sponsored by The Home Depot Foundation, our parent company. Every spring and fall they have an event where homes are worked on all across the city of Houston. They supply the materials, you supply the labor. It’s a lot of fun!
Paint, fauxwood blinds and happy volunteers
I think the best part of the event, besides helping out a wonderful family that needed help, was the teamwork of our crew. We had a total of 20 volunteers show up and everyone worked so hard throughout the day to get the job done. From scraping paint to painting to landscaping and even installing a new American flag, our team finished the whole house in one day, when we had planned for two!
We also surprised the Douglas family with new faux wood window treatments along with the exterior renovation. Scott, our product specialist, measured all of the windows and did the install too! Mrs. Douglas doesn’t like any light coming into the house, so Scott made sure to pick out something that would block light the way she wanted and help keep the house cooler in the summer.
Another fun twist to our volunteer day was discovering a sweet little 4-week old kitten with a nasty bite on its back who wandered up to us, mewing. Our VP of Customer Experience, Stephanie Pertuit, took the kitten (now named Lucky) home and is nursing him back to health.
That’s what happens when Blinds.com-ers invade; Mrs. Douglas even said that she “felt like a new bride” upon seeing her home updated and refreshed. It was such a terrific day!
